Itinerary
Days 1 – 4: Secret Cape Town
The Mother City is an easy destination to explore yourself but with a private nature guide at your disposal for two days, you’ll see a different side to Table Mountain and Cape Point – better views, more wildlife and fewer other people. A guided Table Mountain hike and Cape Point nature tour are part of the itinerary for this tour, leaving you with time to visit the Winelands or visit Robben Island too. Welgelegen Guest House is your boutique base from which to enjoy your time here; it’s conveniently located a short stroll from great restaurants, and it’s only a 10-minute drive to the V&A Waterfront or Camps Bay.
Days 5 – 7: A Sabi Safari
A direct flight from Cape Town to the Kruger’s Nelspruit Airport takes you into the private Sabi Sands Reserve where your transfer quickly becomes a game drive on entering the reserve. The Sabi offers some of Africa’s most reliable and close-up Big 5 game viewing, and with three nights here, you’re bound to have great sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. You’ll head out on morning and afternoon game drives as well as spot-lit evening drives and late-morning walks, led by some of the best guides in the business. Back at camp, your chalet has its own bathroom and veranda; meals are served under the stars whenever possible.
Days 8 – 9: To the Smoke that Thunders
You’ll catch your first sight of Victoria Falls as you pass over the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe but your first destination is upstream – Imbabala Safari Lodge, set close to the Botswana border in classic elephant country. You’ll explore the Zambezi River and its teeming hinterland by 4X4 and river boat when you’ll be on the lookout for hippos and crocodiles. The area is especially productive in the long dry season when great numbers of thirsty animals gather at the Zambezi, attracting big cats and wild dogs.
Days 10 – 11: Paddle the Zambezi River
After viewing Victoria Falls – ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ – close up, it’s time to see a calmer side to the Zambezi River: the slow-moving reaches of the Upper Zambezi, studded with forested islands and ringing with birdsong. For the next two and a half days you’ll move at the pace of the river, gently paddling downstream while your guide points out birds and other animals. You’ll spend both nights camping on the banks of the Zambezi, safe and comfortable in well-equipped tented camps with experienced guides and staff.
Day 12: A Jumbo-sized Finale
Arriving at Victoria Falls late in the afternoon, your canoe journey ends but Africa isn’t quite finished. You’ll be staying at The Elephant Camp, an excellent tented safari camp set on a private reserve overlooking the town and Victoria Falls. There’ll be time for a visit to the elephant sanctuary and some unforgettable interaction with these gentle giants, elephants that have been orphaned and raised in the sanctuary.
Day 13: The Journey Ends
The day starts with breakfast at The Elephant Camp followed by a morning tour of Victoria Falls before you continue by road to Victoria Falls Airport for your onward connection and the end of the tour.
