Getting to Sabi Sand
Find out the best way of getting to the Sabi Sand with Safari Online, your Sabi Safari experts.
Set next to the Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sand lies about 500 kilometres (300 miles) east of Johannesburg. Although it is possible to self-drive there from Johannesburg, it is not recommended as the easiest, quickest or even cheapest option. On the other hand, two local airports and a host of private airstrips means that getting to Sabi Sand by air is fast, safe and simple.
Safari Online advises you to either fly directly from Johannesburg to your Sabi Sand accommodation or go via one of the two airports in the area – Hoedspruit or Nelspruit’s Kruger International Airport. Each airport is about an hour’s flight from Johannesburg after which you then enjoy a short air or road transfer to your lodge; everything is arranged by us.
It is also possible to get to the Sabi Sand from Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Mozambique and Durban.
Getting to Sabi Sand from Johannesburg
The quickest and most direct way to get to the Sabi Sand is from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. Twice daily shuttle flights connect with most airstrips in the reserve; you can leave your Johannesburg hotel after breakfast and sit down to lunch in the Sabi Sand a couple of hours later.
You can also fly to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit Airports from Johannesburg and switch to an overland or charter plane transfer to your chosen Sabi accommodation – we’ll advise you on the best one for your itinerary and budget.
Getting to Sabi Sand from Cape Town, Durban & Mozambique
A daily flight from Cape Town to Nelspruit combines Africa’s favourite city with the best Big 5 game viewing on the continent. You can also add an Indian Ocean beach holiday onto your Sabi safari thanks to regular flights between Nelspruit and Durban, not to mention Vilanculous in Mozambique – gateway to the magnificent Bazaruto Archipelago.
Getting to Sabi Sand from Victoria Falls
A regular regional flight between Zambia’s Livingstone International Airport and Nelspruit means you can marvel at mighty Victoria Falls before or after your Sabi Sand safari, either as a stand-alone experience or as part of a big game safari in Botswana or Zambia.
Please note that Safari Online does not book international flights but we do organise all your regional and domestic flights. These flights are usually included in our pre-packaged tours; if you want to create your own itinerary, then we will be happy to make the necessary flight and transfer bookings for you.
