There are only four suites at Leadwood, each a contemporary masterpiece with a thatched roof and wilderness views. Outside, the private plunge pool catches the eye, as do the sun loungers thoughtfully left on the viewing deck. Step inside through glass sliding doors and enter the suite, complete with double bed and all the comforts of safari accommodation – mini bar, air conditioning, a fireplace, safe and a ceiling fan. Each has an adjoining, generously-sized bathroom with a free-standing bath and the option of indoor and outdoor showers.

Leadwood may be one of the smaller Sabi lodges but its guests don’t want for much. If they leave the sanctuary of their suites, they can sit back to easy armchair game viewing from the lodge’s main observation decks or cool off in the main pool. The lodge itself has an open and welcoming atmosphere; its lounge, bar and dining areas sit under thatch, all with views over the Sand River.

Meals are served in a variety of locations: you may enjoy a bush breakfast, lunch in the breeze-cooled dining room and supper in the convivial embrace of the outdoor boma, a traditional African eating place. Private dining is also available.

The best game viewing at Leadwood is traditionally during the dry season – May to October – when animals are concentrated at water sources and the vegetation is low. But such is the nature of the environment that guests enjoy excellent game viewing all year round. The Big 5 can usually be seen within a few game drives and the area enjoys a great reputation for leopard sightings. You’ll sit back on two game drives a day – early morning and late afternoon. Following sunset drinks and snacks, you’ll return to camp via a spot-lit night drive, giving you the chance to spot unusual nocturnal animals.
